Winton County was established in 1785 and was comprised of what is today Barnwell, Bamberg, Allendale, and Aiken counties. In 1800 the County was renamed Barnwell County for John Barnwell who fought in the Revolutionary War. In later years Aiken, Allendale, and Bamberg counties were carved out of Barnwell. Today, Barnwell County has 548 square miles of land with a population of 23,404 according to a 2004 census estimate. The county grew with the introduction of the SC railroad in the 1830s.
