Southern Carolina Alliance is the regional non-profit economic development organization representing Barnwell County, as well as 6 other counties including Allendale, Bamberg, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties.

SouthernCarolina Alliance’s mission is to sustain and create jobs, through ideals of cooperation and regionalism, that will improve the quality of life in the seven counties of our region. They accomplish this mission through Marketing, Product Development, Community Development and Workforce Development.

Since its first year of operation in 1996, the Alliance has played an increasingly strong leadership told at the local, state and federal levels.

SouthernCarolina Alliance markets multi-county industrial parks, industrial buildings, and sites encompassing over 14,000 acres of industrial property for development. With a primary focus of marketing our region both nationally and internationally, SCA operates with a professional staff specializing in marketing, industrial recruitment, commercial recruitment, product development, grant administration and project management.

SCA assists existing industries with expansions and new industries with start-ups, serving as a liaison to state government, including the SC Department of Commerce, SC Department of Revenue, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, and other agencies involved in licensing, permitting and labor issues.

Whether you’re a hunter, fisherman, athletic enthusiast, boater, or just love nature, Barnwell County may be just the place for you. The county features prevalent rural settings brimming with deer, ducks, turkeys and many other species. Fishing is as close as a short walk for most residents. There are many choices from the popular Lake Edgar Brown and many small creeks to the beautiful Savannah River and the Edisto River the longest black water river in the world. History buffs will find over 200 years of history in our museums, a genealogy in the Barnwell County Library that people from across the United States search for ancestry, and local historical sites. Barnwell is located in the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. The Sundial The Sundial is a unique vertical monument placed in front of the courthouse of Barnwell County. It was given to Barnwell in 1858 by Joseph D. Allen, at the time a state senator from Barnwell. It is thought to be the only free- standing , vertical sundial in the country. The Sundial keeps almost perfect standard time, although standard time was not set up until 1884. Barnwell State Park Located near Blackville on Highway 3 the park offers nature trails, picnic areas, swimming area, fishing , boat rentals, cabins, campgrounds and playgrounds. There is a community building to rent for parties, weddings and other events. Healing Springs Healing Springs is located north of Blackville on SC 3. It is the site of a natural spring that boast of curative powers of the water. It is said the Native Americans brought wounded Revolutionary War soldiers to the springs who were left to die. They survived and walked back to Charleston. In 1944 L.P. Boylston made a legal footnote when he deeded the one acre of land to God where the spring is located. A Mennonite community has grown up around this area.

Barnwell County – The Best Rural Business Climate in the State

Winton County was established in 1785 and was comprised of what is today Barnwell, Bamberg, Allendale, and Aiken counties. In 1800 the County was renamed Barnwell County for John Barnwell who fought in the Revolutionary War. In later years Aiken, Allendale, and Bamberg counties were carved out of Barnwell. Today, Barnwell County has 548 square miles of land with a population of 23,404 according to a 2004 census estimate. The county grew with the introduction of the SC railroad in the 1830s. This railroad linked Charleston, S. C. with the old town of Hamburg which was near present-day Augusta, Ga. on the Savannah River. In 1833 this was the longest stretch of railroad in the world.

Barnwell County has many social and civic organizations such as Rotary, Lions Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Friends of the Libraries, Friends of the Museums, Garden Clubs, Agriculture Club, Circle Theater, The Barnwell County Arts Council, Barnwell County Ministerial Association, and Breakfast Clubs.
